Ceylon tea is renowned as the finest of the world's teas. A planting tradition that has been perfected over centuries has resulted in the country producing a range of the finest tea flavours. Ceylon tea is grown at high, medium and low elevations, with each having a unique flavour profile, influenced by rainfall, soil, elevation, wind, and temperature. Each agro-climatic zone has its own unique characteristics (click on the zones in the map below for elaboration), and the distinct Ceylon character is an embodiment of these characteristics.
Ceylon tea is also known as the cleanest of teas, with the highest standards maintained in agricultural practices and robust testing, to ensure a high quality, safe product for consumers. Pesticide usage is carefully regulated and Ceylon Tea is the world's only ozone friendly tea, certified under the Montreal Protocol.
The Hayleys Group owns two plantation companies, Kelani Valley Plantations and Talawakelle Tea Estates. The plantations collectively produce approximately 15 mn kg of tea (4.5% of Sri Lanka's national production) in 36 tea gardens covering all of Sri Lanka's tea growing agro-climatic zones. Kelani Valley and Talawakelle Plantations include some of the best known garden marks such as Lover's Leap, Mattakelle, Somerset, Great Western, Robgill, Fordyce among others, and these regularly fetch the best prices at the Colombo auction.

The Hayleys Group has always maintained a strong ethos of sustainability, a culture that is embedded across all business lines within the Group. This has resulted in Hayleys being awarded Sri Lanka's Best Corporate Citizen by the apex business chamber of the country, on five separate occasions. This sense of environmental and social responsibility is probably best demonstrated in the Group's Plantation sector.
The business of the sector is not only planting and harvesting tea and rubber, but in holistically managing 20,000 Ha of land, the people living and working there and the flora and fauna that thrive there. Much of this land is in Sri Lanka's most complex and fragile ecosystems and the careful management of biodiversity is crucial.
To illustrate this, Kelani Valley Plantations approach to corporate responsibility has been built on 4 pillars of quality and sustainability.
The highest attention is paid to food safety standards in Hayleys tea factories. Tea cultivation strictly conforms to the guidelines of the Tea Research Institute of Sri Lanka. Our tea factories comply with ISO 22000:2005, HACCP certifications, whilst adhering to all international MRL levels.Thus the tea which will be used by Hayleys Global Beverages, complies with stringent global food safety standards.
Kelani Valley Plantations is a signatory to the UN Global Compact since 2006, enshrining a commitment to respect for human rights, labour standards, environmental protection and elimination of corruption. KVPL is also a member of the Ethical Tea Partnership.
The Home for Every Plantation Worker programme is a multi-pronged approach to create a contented family life for all at our plantations. This includes support for quality housing, community capacity building such as training programmes for skills development, provision of services to improve health and wellbeing of the community and programmes for youth empowerment. Hayleys Global Beverages will be using raw materials which are produced in an ethical manner, providing fair value to farmers whilst ensuring dignified working and living conditions.
Environmental stewardship is a key pillar for our plantations which go beyond mandatory guidelines in protecting the environment in which it operates. Our plantations adopt a holistic approach to environmental protection.
|Water Conservation||Energy Conservation||Solid Waste Management||Biodiversity|
|No chemical zones in proximity to streams||Construction of mini-hydro power plants||Segration of waste||Inventory of flora and fauna at each estate|
|Tea waste water filtration systems||Switching from deisel to firewood||Composting||Identification of conservation status of flora and fauna|
|Strengthening river/stream embankments||Regular energy audits||Safe disposal of waste through approved channels||Special management plans for treatened species and priority conservation zones|
These practices have enabled our plantations to obtain Rainforest Alliance certification, Global GAP, forest stewardship council certification, among others. These environmental practices have also been featured as case studies in high profile institutions such as INSEAD School of Business, UNGC Best Practice Booklet, and CSR Asia. Read Less..
